Sam’s Secret Quips on Giving

Daily prompt: Secret Santa
You get to choose one gift — no price restrictions — for any person you want. The caveat? You have to give it anonymously. What gift would you give, and to whom?

I wish I could present my loved ones with things that are not things.

Stuff begets stuff.

You generally don’t need money for happiness that is happiness.

A commercialised sentiment is no longer a sentiment.

Choose: more or less choices.

Gifts given anonymously don’t stay anonymous for long.

The act of giving is fulfilled only upon acknowledgement.

Is there anything more guilt inducing than a thoughtful gift?

Is there anything more persistent than a thoughtless gift?

The only gift worth giving is the gift of time and I seem to have squandered mine thinking of what gift to give.

You don’t need to give, just lend an ear.

  1. The sentiment is one that I have embraced this year, along with the rest of my family. We are exchanging few gifts this year. In my case, I have been helping an neighbour who was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and miraculously was, after chemo and radiation treatment, considered eligible for surgery. I gave up many shifts at work to be with him and, in the process, got to know him much better. He is still recovering from the surgery, but he is out of the hospital and the prognosis is good. How much I received, though, out of the gift of time I spent with him at doctor’s appointments, chemo sessions, and hospital visits. I always knew he was a good man and neighbour, but now that I know more about him, I am incredibly grateful for the time that allowed us to become close friends.

    1. That’s so moving and inspirational Connie. While most of us just talk/write about such things you actually went out and practice it. I am moved. I wish your neighbour a complete recovery and hope you and your family is having a truly happy Christmas. All the very best for the coming year as well to everyone in your life.

  2. i love what you are saying here. ‘Stuff begets stuff’ is so true. Thank you for being generous with the time you have taken to have a look at and respond to other people’s blogs. Starting a blog has been a fun adventure for me and I know another blogger who appreciates your feedback too. Merry Christmas and looking forward to reading more next year.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words. I read a fellow blogger say the same about me recently and it took me by surprise that me stringing together half sentences with emojis on others’ blogs had such an impact! It makes me so happy to hear this. I wish I could do more but there’s not enough time, especially during the holiday season (ironic isn’t it?). Thank you for reading me and making my adventure all the more special with your comments. Merry Christmas to you and your family and friends. Have a great start to 2015! Cheers!

  3. I would be selfish and give myself the gift of just one more day with my late dad to introduce him to his 2 great grandsons that he never met, to let him fall as helplessly in love with them as I have.

  4. what a wonderful thought! I agree there’s no gift better than time.. but there are people who may need or want more than that (or less – material < time ) or some material comforts that we probably take for granted …..
Here's wishing you and yours the best Xmas cheer and a lot of time together!! ❤ ❤

    1. I agree with you completely Aruna. 🙂 I suppose most of the world is less fortunate or comfortable than me and they definitely need ‘things’ that I take for granted.
The post is directed more towards my circle of family and friends. I feel I need to devote more time to them. So your wish is spot one 🙂
Thank you for reading and for your wonderful comment. I wish you the best for the holidays and for the coming new year. Cheers!
